Swinburne University of Technology is a world-class university creating social and economic impact through science, technology, and innovation. What started in 1908 as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College – founded by engineer, businessman, and philanthropist George Swinburne and his wife Ethel – has evolved into one of Australia's most distinctive dual-sector universities. George Swinburne's vision was simple but powerful: provide technical education to sectors of society otherwise denied further education. That spirit of accessibility and practical learning remains at Swinburne's core today.

The college first enrolled students in 1909 with classes in carpentry, plumbing, and blacksmithing. By 1911, domestic economy courses were added and women began enrolling. In 1913, the institution adopted its founders' name, becoming Swinburne Technical College. The curriculum expanded dramatically over the decades – adding engineering, chemistry, film and television, and computer programming. In 1963, Swinburne pioneered industry-based learning, one of the first educational organizations in Australia to do so. Tertiary degrees arrived in the 1970s. Finally, on July 1, 1992, through an Act of Victorian Parliament, Swinburne achieved full university status as Swinburne University of Technology.

Today, Swinburne maintains three Melbourne campuses in the eastern suburbs – Hawthorn (main campus), Croydon, and Wantirna – plus an international campus in Sarawak, Malaysia. The university also offers extensive online learning through Swinburne Online and Open Universities Australia. Campuses and Location

Hawthorn Campus (Main Campus)

Located just 10 minutes from Melbourne's CBD in the vibrant inner suburb of Hawthorn, the main campus at John Street offers the perfect blend of state-of-the-art facilities and fantastic student lifestyle. Scholarships and Financial Support

International Scholarships

Swinburne automatically considers international students for scholarships when they apply – no separate application needed. The Swinburne International Scholarship (Merit-Based) offers 20% off tuition fees for the full course duration for students commencing undergraduate or postgraduate programs in 2025/2026. Top performers receive the Swinburne International Excellence Scholarship with 30% off tuition fees for the entire course. Pathway students (Foundation, UniLink, PQP) can access the International Excellence Pathway Scholarship providing $2,500 per year for up to 2 years.

Specific scholarship exclusions apply to Bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Aviation and Piloting programs, Master of Physiotherapy, Master of Dietetics, Master of Occupational Therapy, and research degrees. The ELICOS Scholarship refunds up to $5,000 (10 weeks of ELICOS fees) for students who complete English language courses before starting their main program.

Domestic Scholarships

Local students can access various scholarships including the Access Scholarship for Pathways Students ($5,500 first year, $5,000 subsequent years for maximum 3 years) for students who completed VET qualifications demonstrating financial or personal hardship. FEE-HELP loans are available for eligible domestic students in higher education programs.

Research Scholarships

The Tuition Fee Scholarship covers full tuition for international PhD, Doctor of Psychology, or Master by Research students (up to 4 years doctoral, 2 years masters). Awarded case-by-case with Principal Supervisor support.

Tuition fees vary by program. Undergraduate international fees for 2025 range approximately AUD 28,000-40,000 annually for most programs (three-year degrees total AUD 84,000-120,000). Some specialized programs like Aviation have higher fees. Master degrees range approximately AUD 27,500-51,000 total depending on program and duration.
